Bethany

Bethany (Al Maghtas) The Baptism site located less than two Km. east from the Jordan River. The place to which Jesus fled for safety after being threatened with stoning in Jerusalem, as it is mentioned in John 10:40 “Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days”. Bethany’s ancient remains includes structures from the 1st century AD settlement of John the Baptist with large plastered pools with steps for full immersion. The remains of the 5th – 6th centuries AD are the ones of the Byzantine settlement known also as Ainon or Saphsaphas.
